Born October 21st, 1925, Miss Cruz quickly rose to frame in the 50s as a singer of guarachas, music from Cuba with a rapid tempo and adventurous lyrics. Celia Cruz was born in Havana, Cuba and her work with La Sonora Matancera added to her frame and later she became a global ambassador for Afro-Cuban music. Her powerful voice and proud celebration of Black Cuban identity made her a cultural symbol of resistance, resilience, and joy. Celia's music highlights deep African influences incorporated into Caribbean genres, from early guaracha and rumba to salsa with Fania All-Stars.
