Central Artist: Celia Cruz Description: In our last playlist together, we will be focusing on Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso, better known as Celia Cruz and internationally known as the "Queen of Salsa." Born October 21st, 1925, Miss Cruz quickly rose to frame in the 50s as a singer of guarachas, music from Cuba with a rapid tempo and adventurous lyrics.  Celia Cruz was born in Havana, Cuba and her work with La Sonora Matancera added to her frame and later she became a global ambassador for Afro-Cuban music. Her powerful voice and proud celebration of Black Cuban identity made her a cultural symbol of resistance, resilience, and joy. Celia's music highlights deep African influences incorporated into Caribbean genres, from early guaracha and rumba to salsa with Fania All-Stars. Central Artist: Wim Statius Muller Description: In this playlist, we will focus on Wim Statius Muller, a famous classical pianist and composer from Curaçao. He is known as "Curaçao’s Chopin" because he combined classical European music with Caribbean rhythms and melodies. Will Statius Muller's work is emotional, elegant, and deeply connected to Caribbean culture. Many of his pieces are called danzas antillanas or Antillean dances because they show how classical music can carry Caribbean history and feelings. Central Artist: Chevalier de Saint-Georges Description:  In this playlist, we explore the life and music of Joseph Bologne who is better known as The Chevalier de Saint-Georges. He was born in 1745 in Guadeloupe to a French plantation owner and an enslaved Senegalese woman, showing that Joseph Bologne’s life was shaped by both privilege and prejudice. Taken to France at the age of seven, Bologne would become a fencer, military leader, and one of the most talented composers and conductors of 18th-century Europe.  Joseph Bologne is often referred to as “the Black Mozart,” because he made his mark in Parisian musical society through elegant symphonies, string quartets, operas, and violin concertos. However, despite his immense talent and public acclaim, racial prejudice limited his opportunities, even barring him from leading the Paris Opéra.
